Dear HMRC, I received dividend from Preferred Shares of certain company. Do these count as Dividend or Interest income when I file for self assessment? Thanks

Hi,

Income from 'Preferred shares' is treated as dividends.

Thank you.

Hi Team I made a full loss on an investment in Preference Shares which are now worthless? I assume the loss can be offset against Capital gains tax, but are there any other exceptional scenarios where a loss on Preference shares can be offset against income tax? Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Hi,

Losses on listed shares are declared in the 'listed shares  and securities' section of the capital gains supplementary page SA108.  You should enter 'NVC' in box 29 and select the same from the drop down option in the online return.

Losses can be carried forward and set against future gains.

Thank you.
