Why, in 2024, can non-residents still not submit their tax return like everyone else through the website? What bits of information do non-residents have to provide that are so unique that they can't be captured by a web form?

Hi Kenneth MacArthur,
We are sorry but at present non residents cannot submit their tax return using HMRC software as a non resident page SA109 is needed.
You can submit the paper tax return or file using 3rd party commercial software:
Self Assessment commercial software suppliers
Thank you.

I understand that, but why can't you add support for populating SA109 to the self-assessment facility on the HMRC website? The answer is presumably that you could indeed add such support, but it is not a priority for you to do so (even many years after the self-assessment facility on the HMRC website launched). The question is: why is it not a priority?

Hi Kenneth,

We cannot answer this question, as it is a matter of goverment policy and not a tax enquiry.

Thank you.
