Do I need to register for a self-assessment?

I've had a read through the .gov website, but I'm not 100% certain if I need to register. I earnt approximately £1500 doing ad-hoc work. At the time I was unemployed but looking for work, and therefore I wasn't registered as self-employed or a sole trader. Do I need to register and pay tax? I wasn't a business or self-employed but I did earn above the £1,000 threshold.
