Hi, I wonder if anyone can give me some advice? I pay my tax via PAYE but complete a tax return due to professional subscriptions and some gift aid payments. The self assessment form asks me to enter the outstanding debt which was included in my 6 April 2022 to 5 April 2023 PAYE Notice of Coding (P2). Is this the same as the "Less Adjustment for tax you owe (earlier year)" on the P2? In my case this figure is just over 5k and when I check the 2022/23 P2, it states that the 5k figure is the amount by which my tax free allowance has been reduced to allow HMRC to collect an outstanding amount of just over 2k from a previous year. any advice much appreciated Tom

Hi,

If there was an underpayment from an earlier tax year collected in your 2022 to 2023 tax code then you would enter that underpayment collected not the restriction in your tax code to collect this.

If you are not sure of the figure if you contact HMRC we can this for you.

Thank you.
