Just completed Self Assessment for 2022/2023 and agreed a payment plan over the next 12 months to pay a tax bill for that year of around abouts £2,000.00. My income was around £20,000.00 and my expenses was around £10,000.00 hence a profit margin of around £10,000.00. But surely my Personal Tax Free Allowance should be applied here and I shouldn't have to pay any tax whatsoever?! Can someone please help me. I phoned back HMRC Self Assessment to query this / the payments that were just set up, but they said they can't help and I should phone the Tax Team, which I plan to do (but when you have to be at work and see your clients first thing in the morning you can't stop and have another hours chat on the phone. We all get a £12,000.00-ish tax free allowance so surely I shouldn't have to pay any tax at all! Please help!
