I want to register with HMRC for self-assessment as a sole trader. I started trading in January 2016 while living overseas. I moved to the UK in June 2023. When setting up a business tax account (in the business details section), I am asked the question: “When did you start working for yourself?” Do I put January 2016 or June 2023? I'm worried that if I put January 2016, HMRC might think I owe them 7 years' back tax.

Hi,
In this case it would be June 2023.
Thank you.
