I've not completed a self-assessment previously but having received a large PILON in Feb 2023, I need to complete one for the 2022-23 tax year. I am getting myself really confused about which figures to put where! I believe my full PILON was subject to tax (there was no exemption for the first £30K as far as I can see - nothing mentioned on pay slip etc). Do I include the full PILON amount in the 'other income' section and therefore remove it from my overall income figure? Any advice, much appreciated!

Hi,

Please refer to the guidance below, specifically the notes for boxes 5-9 on how to complete this section:

Thank you.

That guidance says PILON goes in box 3 though, not 5-9 ... Also if your PILON went through payroll so that it is included in your P45, it would have already been accounted for within the employment section of the tax return, in which case the prevailing advice given in other threads in this forum seems to be to leave it in the employment section, and only report figures not already covered there in the 'other income' section.

Thanks! That is what I thought too :-)
