I have been resident in Australia for 30 years with no UK income. In Tax Year 2023/ 24 I took a lump sum from a private pension and was taxed at the emergency rate. I applied for and received a rebate. With the lump sum I invested in a property with my brother and next year will be declaring that rental income. As I have already established my tax residency status in Australia with the tax rebate do I still have to obtain a Certificate of Residency and Overseas Tax Relief when I do my self assessment return?

Hi,
No. as its UK rental, HMRC have the first rights to taxation on this and no relief can be given in respect of foreign tax paid. It would be in Australia that you would be looking for this as tax is due there also. as a non resident landlord you will need to include the residence section of the tax return and as such you cannot file online using HMRC software. You will need to file by paper or buy 3rd party software.
Thank you.
