After I submitted my tax return on time (22 Dec 23), I received a letter in July 2024 advising that I owed tax and that I would need to pay a penalty for not paying it. I successfully appealed the penalty notice, as my return was submitted on time and with no errors and set up a repayment plan to repay the outstanding amount (which was not collected via my tax code, which it should have been) over 5 months. I was then subsequently told on another call that I didn't owe any tax and the first payment I made was refunded and the payment plan cancelled. However, I have now received another penalty for not paying the original outstanding amount, which I have again appealed, but I need to find out whether I actually owe anything or not. I tried contacting HMRC by telephone, using the number provided on the letter, but after holding for 30 mins, was told it was the wrong number and got cut off. I have tried calling back twice, again holding for around 30 mins each time, before getting cut off. All I am trying to do, is to find out whether I actually owe anything or not so that I can get this resolved and stop getting penalty notices (my statement it shows zero balance outstanding) - could you advise the correct telephone number to contact, or address to write to. I want to get this resolved before submitting my return for 2023/24. thanks

We apologise for the issues you have had in confirming the correct amount that you owe, if anything, for the 2023 to 2024 tax year. The contact details for our Self Assessment team are here:
