I am earning an average of around £5-6k per annum through part-time self-employment as a photographer. In the 2023-24 tax year, I also made a very tiny amount by completing an online survey which was paid to me as $5 USD through PayPal. This was not related to photography or my main self-employment. I have a few questions regarding this: 1. Should I include this in Box 17, "other taxable income", or as part of my self-employment turnover? 2. How should I calculate the exchange from $5 USD into GBP to get a figure to put on my return? Is it based on the exchange rate at the time the tax return is filed, at the time the payment was received, or at the time it was transferred from PayPal to my UK bank account? 3. Is there anything else I need to be aware of in terms of reporting this $5 USD on my tax return since it was received in a different currency? Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi jm87,
1. Declare as other earned income
2. You can use any of the spot rates within the tax year - HMRC currency exchange average rates
3. No
