Hi I made a largish one off payment to a public service sector pension fund (Teachers Pension) to purchase additional pension. The payment was made by cheque out of my savings -ie it was not taken from my salary. The pension fund does not provide relief at source. I believe that I am entitled to basic rate tax relief on this payment limited to the amount of tax that I actually paid in the tax year. Is my understanding correct? If I fill in a tax return where should I enter this payment? Thanks Joanne

Hi,

If you are a higher rate tax payer and your pension contributions are taken from net pay then yes you can claim the relief on your Self Assessment tax return. On the tailor your tax return

section online you would answer yes to the question- Did you make contributions towards a personal pension or retirement annuity? This will open the section to declare the pension

contribution made to receive the tax relief.

Thank you.
