Hello, On 16 October 2024, I made an application to register for Self-Assessment. I am aware that this was past the 5 October deadline, but I understand that provided a return is made before 31 January 2025, I will not have to pay a penalty. However, since making the application on 16 October 2024, I have not received any indication from HMRC that the application has been received. I did not receive an email confirming that the application had been received, nor have I been able to track the application on the Government Gateway. I am concerned that my application was not received and I had thought that I would receive a notification that the application has been received. Last year, I applied for a certificate of tax residency in the UK and I received an email confirming receipt of the application on the same day that I made the application. As I made the application after the 5 October deadline, I want to make sure that I file my self-assessment return as soon as possible, hence I want to make sure that my application for registering for self-assessment was properly received by HMRC. According to HMRC's Guidance on 'When to expect a reply' I should not contact HMRC until 23 November, but I would like to know whether the application has at least been received without waiting until then, in light of the 31 January 2025 deadline. Should I be concerned about the lack of an email confirming the receipt of my application to register for self-assessment? Thank you in advance for your help.
