I have just moved to London and am starting to work here on a freelance basis as a German tutor. Do I need to register as a sole trader, or what is the correct procedure for this? Thank you for your help and best regards.

Hi,
If your gross turnover from trading exceeds £1000 in a tax year, you are rquired to complete a Self Assessment tax return.  If you have not registered for Self Assessment as self employed, you can do this here:
Set up as a sole trader: step by step
Thank you.

Thank you for your response. I have just registered for Self Assessment as self-employed. One more question: Do I also need to register for VAT? (I am a foreign national residing in London, and my monthly turnover is definitely below £85,000.) Thank you for your help and best redards.

Hi.

You would only be required to register for VAT if you are making taxable suuples above the threshold of £90K.

Generally the provision of education is exempt from VAT.

However please see the guidance below:

Education and vocational training (VAT Notice 701/30)

6. Private tuition

Who should register for VAT (VAT Notice 700/1)  .

Thank you .
