I submitted my self-assessment return for the year ending 5 April 2024 in June 2024. I understand that the payment due date is 31 January 2025. In June 2024, I paid the full tax payable amount through the HMRC system. Today, when I logged into my self-assessment tax account, the system indicated that I had overpaid the tax and still owed the same amount for the year 2023/24. It appears that the system hasn't applied or matched my payment to the payable tax for 2023/24. Is this normal? When can I expect the system to apply or match my payment to my outstanding payable tax?

Hi WM,
As the payment is not due until 31 January 2025 the payment will show as a credit on your account until closer to the due date and then it will be allocated.
Thank you.
