I have signed-up for gift aid with a charity shop and they have written to me advising me that they have sold some of the goods I donated and the charity will be claiming Gift Aid. Do I include the sum being claimed by the charity on my self assessment tax return?

Hi HighStreetTaxQuestions,
You can include the amount you donate to the charity on your Self Assessment tax return.
If you are a higher rate tax payer then you will receive relief on the payments.
Thank you.

Thank you for the reply. If you don’t mind I would just to clarify your answer in simple terms:- 1. I donated goods to a charity shop and signed a gift aid form. 2. The charity shop sold these good and claimed gift aid against the money they received. 3. The charity shop advised me that they sold the items I donated for £xxx (net of commission and VAT) which will allow the charity to reclaim Gift Aid of £yyy. 4. I can include £xxx on my Self Assessment tax return. Have I understood the situation correctly? Thank you for your time and patience,

Hi HighStreetTaxQuestions,
Please refer to guidance here:
Tax relief when you donate to a charity
Tax relief will only apply if you are a higher rate tax payer.
Thank you.

Hello HMRC Admin 25, Thank you for responding to my queries. I have read the material that you suggested on the HMRC web site and the reason I asked this question was because the HMRC guidance material did not answer my question, so let me try and ask the question again. If I donate goods to a charity and they sell those goods to make money for the charity and claim gift aid on that amount, then as a higher rate tax payer can I include the amount they sold the items for (net of commission and VAT) on my Self Assessment tax return? Thank you.
