Hi, I have a 2nd job lecturing which is paid quarterly. My main job does PAYE. I worked from Sept 2022- April 2023 and was paid in May 2023. When do I have to do my tax return? Based on when I worked or when I was paid? Just want to check as I know the deadline is coming up. Thanks

Hi ellieb23,
This depends on which accounting method you decide to use.
Most small businesses and sole traders use Cash Accounting, where the income is declared for the date it was earned and invoiced - in your case, you would file a 22/23 return to declare your Sept 2022- April 2023 income.
Cash basis
But you may decide to use traditional accounting instead.
Business records if you're self-employed
Thank you.

Hi, i worked in sept- April 22-23 and the invoice went in at the end of April and I was paid in May. This was one off consultancy work, not ongoing.

Hi,
If this was self employed income with gross income over £1000 then you will need to register as self employed and complete a Self Assessment tax return:
Set up as a sole trader
Thankyou
