I was paid £1881.7 in Child Benefit in 22/23 yet my self assessment calculation is £2,647.88. I'm under the impression as part of the Higher Income Benefit Charge i should only have to pay back at a maximum what was paid to me. I have tried ringing 0300 200 3310 from https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/self-assessment and they simply cut me off when i explain the issue. Can someone please help?

Hi,

You may have other deductions declared that were not in your tax code. You can contact or Self Assessment team by webchat to clarify.

Self Assessment: general enquiries

Thank you.

I've tried the webchat several times and it's just a bot i can't get past. This is a disgrace i need to speak to someone. You are charging me 100s of £ without telling me why

Hi franklin13,
When you join the chat, ask to speak to an agent or adviser and this will bypass the bot.
Thank you.
