I completed my tax return by self assessment for the 2022-23 tax year. I worked full-time overseas in the 2023-24 tax year and had stayed in the UK for around 40 days only during the entire year. I believe I met the third automatic overseas test and therefore shouldn't need to file a tax return for 2023-24. How should I inform HMRC? Can I do this online through my tax account?

Hi ,

You can check if you meet the criteria to file a Self Assessment at:

Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return  .

If you do not meet the criteria then you can send an online submission to review/update your record .

Thank you .

Your previous response was misleading. In my case, according to the the 3rd Automatic Overseas Rule , I am not a tax resident for the 2023-2024 tax year as I worked overseas full time whole year and only stayed in the UK for around 30 days. My question is, what do I need to do to notify HMRC that I am not a tax resident for 2023-2024?

Hi,
If you do not meet SA criteria for the year, and need to notify HMRC that you do not need to complete a tax return, you find the online submission form here:

Thank you.
