Good evening, My mother paid capital gains tax on the 10th November 2024 following the sale of a property in October 2024. Can you advise if as a result of this she will need to complete a tax return in 2025? The question that relates to capital gains tax on the 'Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return' page of the Gov.uk website is as follows: 8. Do you need to pay any Capital Gains Tax? The answer to this question is (I think) no, because my mother doesn't need to pay capital gains tax. Capital gains tax was due, but it was paid in November 2024 to meet with the 60 day deadline. Answering no leads to guidance that a tax return is not due. However, I fear that a tax return should still be completed, regardless of the fact that no capital gains tax needs to be paid (as it has already been paid). I hope this make sense and that you are able to clarify for me. Many thanks, Ian

Hi,
So long as you mum does not need to complete a tax return for any other reason for 2024 to 2025, then there would be no requirement to declare the disposal in a tax return.
Thank you
