Becoming sole trader

At the moment I am unfit for work but I'm trying to be pro-active for the future. I am currently trying to learn the basics of being a sole trader on days I am feeling less ill. At the moment I couldn't practically hold down a job not least because I often end up in hospital. Should I register as a sole trader now to protect my business name even though I'm unwell? I could do with guidance as to what I could practically do now with a view of looking forward to future options.
