Hi I received an email saying I had to do a self assessment for the year 21-22 and due to company share payout my salary went above the 50k threshold. So after completing the assessment I need to pay back £1233. This part I am fine with. If I am having to pay back this for 21-22 should I assume I will need to pay back the same again for 22-23? However after logging in to make a payment towards this I have noticed in my tax free amount for the year 23-24 there is £686 deducted for Child Benefit. Why is this being deducted from the tax free amount? I have never been above the threshold before the share payout although salary is now over 50k. Finding this all a bit confusing. Opting out of child benefit soon.

Hi Paul Smith,
If there is a tax deduction in your code we are trying to collect anything due for 23-24 during the year to try and avoid a bill when you complete your Self Assessment Tax return.
If you would prefer not to have a deduction in your code contact our helpline.

Thank you.

Ok that makes sense. So when I do a self assessment for this year that will automatically be taken into account? How do I find out if that was done for the year 22/23 aswell?

Hi,

It will be taken into account. If you contact our Income Tax team we can advise regarding the 2022 to 2023 code.
