My situation qualifies for split year treatment. I was living in New Zealand for the first seven weeks of the 2023/24 tax year but am now permanently resident back in the UK. I would like to clarify if I need specifically to seek Foreign Tax Credit Relief on my self-assessment return for employment income, bank interest, and superannuation gains in New Zealand, or if this is picked up by HMRC through being under split year treatment. Thank you.

Hi,
You need to claim foreign tax credit relief.  It is not automatically given.  Your tax return should show your UK income for the whole tax year and your foreign income only from the date you arrived in the UK.
Thank you.
