VAT payable by contractor when taking work from another unregistered company

I have been offered to take subcontracted work from a company who should be registered for vat but tries to evade registration by setting other companies up to distribute the income. If I take this work and it subsequently comes to pass that the company is investigated, would I then be liable in any way for the backdated VAT.
