My question relates to the submission of Value Added Tax returns through XERO or any other form of Making Tax Digital packages. Upon submission of a return, there is the option to leave a note of up to 200 characters. I do this before submitting the return through XERO. Does HMRC have access to these notes and do they read them?

Only the values in Boxes 1 to 9 are submitted via MTD. If you have a VAT inspection, HMRC can ask to access your Xero software and they would then be able to see any notes. Not all HMRC inspections require access to your accounting software, sometimes HMRC just ask for copy invoices or a print out of the VAT report.

Hi,

HMRC doesn't have access to these notes unfortunately.

Thank you.
