Hi, I am sole trader, due to the rolling turnover from 1st to 11th months (Oct 22 to Aug 23) was over the £85k on 30 Aug 2023 then I registered the VAT number as required. But when I am registering the VAT registration, a question asked, “When did you become VAT registered?” I answered “30 Aug 2023” because this date was exceeded the £85k. Now I received the VAT registration number and I started to use Xero for my VAT Return, follow the instruction I was connected to the HMRC and see my VAT returns field. The period state in the HMRC VAT return is 30/Aug/2023 to 30/Jun/2024. But the rolling turnover for this period (30/Aug/2023 to 30/Jun/2024, 11 months) is less than £85k (~£64k). If counting 12 months from Jul/23 to Jun/24, it will be £76k. Since the client is based in Switzerland and the construction project is in Australia Sydney. For my understanding, the service to outside EU/UK should no VAT. So, the VAT item in the invoices is 0%. So, in the VAT Return: Box 1 £0 Box 2 £0 Box 3 £0 Box 4 £0 Box 5 £0 Box 6 £64K or £76K? Box 7 £0 Box 8 £0 Box 9 £0 So, my question is what figure should I put into the Box 6?

Hi,

The figure you put in box 6 is the net value of your turnover for the period of your VAT return. If there is no VAT to be charged then the box 1 should show a nil figure and the box 6 the value of the supplies. You can see the guidance here:

How to fill in and submit your VAT Return (VAT Notice 700/12)

If you are not making taxable supplies in the UK then this will be a voluntary registration. However, you still need to complete VAT returns on a quarterly basis and include the figures for your supplies even though your output tax will be zero.

Thank you.
