After over 7 months after originally applying before achieving our VAT Registration, and a resulting backdated date of registration when registration was eventually finalised, we received two penalty notices because the HMRC system incorrectly concluded we were "late payers". ( Of course, we could not pay the VAT before VRS had confirmed registration and we actually completed our first return and paid all we owed as soon as we were able to.) Subsequently, as you might expect, we appealed these penalties and it would seem they have now, after about 36 days been wiped from our online account so we conclude we have successfully navigated the process. ( No postal notification as yet ?). Our problem is that during the wait for the appeal process to conclude, our online account has now shown a further charge, one of interest for the period prior to our VAT registration, relating to the backdated intended date we originally applied for and obviously linked to the original flawed penalties. This interest charge did not show when we made the appeal and therefore we did not raise this at the time of appeal. We can find no references as to how to "overturn" this. Please advise. Thank you.

Hi Richard Witzend,
Unfortunately you are not able to appeal the interest charge via your Business Tax Account or in writing.
However, if you contact our Helpline on 03002003700 we can complete an 'interest objection' and refer this over to our Appeals Team on your behalf.
Thank you.
