I may take on some side hustles, in addition to my full-time job. I'd ike to know as a freelancer, besides doing self-assessment and file tax returns for any income earned through self-employment, do I also need to set up VAT and file VAT return? I have not had any existing or potential freelance jobs yet but I'd like to set myself up now to prepare for it when and if I do have freelance jobs in the future. Thank you!

Hi,

You only have to register for VAT once your turnover reaches £85000 in a rolling 12 month period.  

However, you can voluntarily register if you are making taxable supplies. You can see guidance here:
