Supplier Requirements for collecting VAT ID from Customers

What is the acceptable practice for obtaining customer VAT ID? Is it required that the customer provides a copy of the VAT certificate or can they send you the VAT ID on company letterhead?

The supplier should be providing your VAT number on their invoice to you.

You can then check this on the online VAT checker.
