Been claiming VAT repayments for 3 years now, we are a construction company that specialises in HMO’s hence under VAT 708 reduced VAT scheme of 5%. Our last VAT submission on 1st Jan has been lagged on sending for further checks, I have called offered to provide further information but nothing. They just say it’s with compliance. It’s crazy as it causes cash flow issues

It can be frustrating but all you can do is to keep calling the helpline. I know from experience of my own clients (also in the construction sector) that most refunds get processed within 30 days or less, sometimes they take longer and often there is no logic or reason for it, I think sometimes one or two slip through the net. The only saving grace is that if repayment is delayed then you are entitled to repayment supplement/an additional amount from HMRC for the delays caused but appreciate it is cold comfort when you need the refund to buy more materials/keep the business going.

Hi,

We are sorry to hear you are still waiting for your repayment. Any repayment return can be subject to checks and so it is a matter of waiting for these checks to be completed before we can make the repayment. We aim to make repayments within 21 days and if it is taking longer than this then you can contact our VAT team and we can investigate further.
