@HMRC Admin 25 Thank you -
RE: 18 digits reference number of volunteer NI contributions
To add to previous suggestions, the excuse that HMRC doesn't know which years to allocate payments against doesn't really hold water. The payments for back years are standard amounts. Let's call them X, Y, Z etc A simple computer program should be able to parse payments made into 3X + 2Y + 1Z etc As for finding which years are intended, always allocate the payments to the oldest possible years and you will have your breakdown. Lets say in the above example there were a possible 5 years at amount X, 3 at Y, and one at Z, the oldest three X would be allocated (leaving 2 to pay in future if desired) plus the oldest two Y, plus the Z. Simple stuff. -

Reference number for voluntary NI contributions ?
Two years ago I made two voluntary contributions to make up some of my shortfall in NI "years" to improve my pension forecast. I now want to make another voluntary contribution. Can I use the same reference number that I was given then (18 digits), and sort code (08-32-20) and a/c no. (12001004) ? I tried phoning the helpline but waiting times are astronomical. -
Repeat payments for shortfall years in NICO for pension
Hello, I made two payments in Feb and Mar 2021 to pay for a total of 9 years' shortfall in NICO. I was given a reference number and a sort code 08-32-20 and a/c no. 12001004. I still have shortfall years to make up so I want to make another payment this month before the cost goes up. Can I use the same sort code account number and reference number to make the new payment? I know the exact amounts needed for each shortfall payment, from my HMRC client space. TIA
