  • RE: State Pension Contributions Living Abroad

Hi, I lived in Sweden between 1990 to 2001, except for a period in 1996, when I returned and worked in the UK for 6 months. I would like to make voluntary National Insurance (NI) contributions for the 10 year period I lived and worked abroad. 1) Can I do this? 2) Is there a deadline for applying to make NI contributions when you've lived and worked abroad, i.e. how far back can I go considering this specifically between 1990-2001? 3) How can I find out how much I'll have to pay for each year between 1990-2001? Please note I already have a HMRC Government Gateway account and have checked my NI years and the only information given for 1990-2001 is 'Year is not full'. 4) I am assuming these 1990-2001 years are at a lower NI historic rate than the current NI rate - is that correct? 5) I have already talked to the International Pension Centre and they tell me that because I am not at pension age or 6 months away they cannot advise as people not in this category must talk to the Future Pension Centre as they have access to my full NI contributions. The Future Pension Centre tells me they cannot provide information as they are overloaded and it will be 8 weeks before someone will call me back. However, if there is a deadline for the years 1990-2001 and will I still be able to make voluntary contributions for those years after 5th April 2025? Many thanks!
