  • Self assessment for child benefit

Hello, We have recently completed our self assessment form for child benefit and it's all gone haywire. Our child was born on 25th March, so we received a very small amount of child benefit for 2023/24 (£48). Both my and my partner earned above the threshold for that year, so we know this will need to be repaid in full through the high income charge. (We claimed as we ahve both massively reduced our hours/income for the 24/25 year). My partner earned higher, so has completed a self assessment form (which is ludicrously complicated and unhelpful for this purpose). She was paid through PAYE with no other income. Yet the system tells us we now owe almost £4,000. Is there not an easy way for us to just pay the £48 we owe. We cannot afford to pay a massive tax bill due to HMRC having a confusing system. I fail to believe this is the best way for thousands of people to have to engage with this system.
