  • Repaying too much pension tax relief for non-earner

For a non-earner (e.g. disabled person in receipt of benefits), the cap on tax relief is £2,880. But if they were to pay a large lump sum into a pension (e.g. from an inheritance), most providers default to claiming relief at source on all the monies. Whose responsibility is it to repay back the excess relief - the provider or the individual? I can see instructions on how the provider pays it back, but can't find anything about the individual repaying it. i.e. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/pension-administrators-reclaim-tax-relief-using-relief-at-source
