England: Applying against penalty
I moved to UK in Dec 2020 and my employer provided for someone to help with tax return in first year i.e 2020-2021. I checked briefly and I saw that only if you receive any additional income then you had to file your tax return and I was just earning from my job where I was paying through PAYE. I just received penalty notices in 2024 one on 24 June for the year 2021-2022 where I have been charged| Tax year ending | Due date | Description | Amount (£) | |-----------------|--------------|---------------------------------|------------| | 05 Apr 2023 | 08 Aug 2024 | Daily penalty | 580.00 | | 05 Apr 2023 | 21 Mar 2024 | Late filing penalty | 100.00 | | 05 Apr 2022 | 21 Mar 2024 | 12 month late filing penalty | 300.00 | | 05 Apr 2022 | 21 Sep 2023 | 6 month late filing penalty | 300.00 | | 05 Apr 2022 | 21 Sep 2023 | Daily penalty | 900.00 | | 05 Apr 2022 | 23 Mar 2023 | Late filing penalty | 100.00 | I don't understand how this happened, my income was well under the threshold for personal allowance to be applied. In the tax year ending 2022, I can see that I had to pay £3.60 in tax for which I have been fined £1691.83 which seems pretty excessive. Couple of qns: 1. I have filed an appeal but I have multiple penalties issued so do I need to file an appeal for each type of penalty/year? 2. I know that the TAT is around 30-45 days but I am in a crunch (looking to buy my first home) and really need this money that i had to pay HMRC as I was incurring interest on it. Is there anyway to expedite this? Thanks
