  • Deduction for professional subscription fee

Hi HMRC, I registered as a student with Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT). This is a professional body under HMRC approved list as "Taxation Chartered Institute of". I took the exam organized by them to pursue a professional qualification. The qualification is required for my employment. I have incurred a few related expenses as below. 1) Student registration fee paid to CIOT 2) Exam registration fee paid to CIOT 3) Course fee paid to third party for exam preparation I have yet to pass all required exams and my status is a "student" instead of a "member". Can I claim any expense listed above as a deduction when I file my self assessment? Thanks. Regards, Kelvin

  • RE: Claim tax relief on subscriptions to professional bodies

Any updated on this question please? Hi HMRC, On your list of Approved learned societies and professional organisations, Chartered Financial Analyst Society of the UK (CFA Society of the UK) is an approved organization. May I check if Chartered Financial Analyst Institute (CFA Institute) is also an approved organization? CFA Institute governs activities related to the CFA® Program exam worldwide, while CFA UK is a member society under CFA Institute.

  • Tax on non-UK reporting Accumulating ETF during with Temporary non-residents period

Hi team, I am UK tax resident for the last 10 years. I purchased some non-UK reporting accumulating ETF (all dividend are reinvested) when I am UK tax resident, say during tax year 2023/24. I move oversea and becomes non-UK resident during tax year 2024/25. So in tax year 2024/25, I have the status of temporary non-resident. From my understanding, gain from non-UK reporting accumulating ETF is taxed as Offshore Income Gains and tax under Income tax rate. May I ask how the gain on disposal will be taxed? Thanks.
  • RE: Contributed to 2 Flexible Cash ISA in tax year 2023/24

Hi team, thanks for the reply When I try to close my Cash ISA with the second ISA provider, as I have deposited the fund for 3 days, I have accrued an interst of £0.48. They can't claw it back due to operational issue. What should I do with this interest (as I should NOT be entitlied to it)? Do I need to keep any record or report that? Thanks.
  • Contributed to 2 Flexible Cash ISA in tax year 2023/24

Hi team, I contributed to my existing Cash ISA back in April 2023. A few day aga I mistakenly opened a second Flexible Cash ISA account with another provider and transferred £1,300 into it. I realized this is not allowed so I withdrew £1,300 from the second Flexible Cash ISA account. No interest has been paid yet. 1) Do I need to report this error to HMRC and how? 2) What should I do with the second Flexible Cash ISA account? Should I notify the provider for my error and ask them to close my account. 3) For the £1,300 quota, can I still use it to contribute into my other LISA / S&S ISA?
  • Interest rate for Time to Pay arrangement

Hi Admin, When I sign up for a Time to Pay to pay my self assessment bill by installments, what is the interest rate charge on the oustanding balance? Does HMRC use the official interest (2.5%) or the late payment interest rate for income tax (7.75%)?
