National insurance Number fraud
National insurance number fraud Someone has been fraudulently using my national insurance number and as a result I have received a tax bill in respect of their earnings from a company that I have never worked for. I have been in correspondence with the HMRC helpline for over a year now and frustratingly am no closer to resolving this situation. I am being asked by HMRC to contact this company (who do not know me) and advise them of this fraud (that they are a party to) and request that they alter their records and any submissions they have made to HMRC. I have asked that HMRC contact the company directly as they will surely have more authority with this company than me ( a 22 year old apprentice that they have had no previous dealings with). I am extremely disappointed in the lack of help and understanding that I experienced from the helpline. I see on a previous thread that HMRC accepted in a similar situation there had been a ‘mismatch’ of national insurance numbers … is that possibly what has happened in my case? What are my options now? I see no point in calling the helpline again. Should I go to the police? Should I contact my MP as HMRC suggested?
