Self-Assessment Requirement for Overseas Bank Interest and PAYE Handling of UK Interest
Hi, I moved to the UK in August 2021, and before that, I lived overseas. I started working in the UK in June 2022, and I am an employee with a PAYE account. My Income Tax rates fall within the £12,571 to £50,270 bracket. In the past two years, I completed the self-assessment questionnaire on the HMRC website, and the results indicated that I did not need to do self-assessment. However, I might have misunderstood some of the questions. Recently, I discovered that even overseas bank interest less than £300 needs to be declared. So this year, I applied for self-assessment and am now waiting for my UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference). However, I am unsure how to handle my situation because I've asked many UK colleagues, friends, and neighbours, but I couldn't get a definite answer. I hope HMRC can clarify. My financial details are as follows: 21/22: UK bank interest: £30, overseas bank interest: less than £300 22/23: UK bank interest: £1500, overseas bank interest: less than £300 23/24: UK bank interest: £4000, overseas bank interest: less than £300 Questions: 1.Since I only recently found out that I need to declare overseas bank interest, how should I declare and pay taxes for the previous years? 2.For the 22/23 tax year, was my UK bank interest automatically included and paid through my PAYE account? I asked some local colleagues, and they said that the bank would automatically notify HMRC, and it would be handled through my PAYE account. Is this correct? 3.For 23/24, will my UK bank interest also be automatically handled through my PAYE account, or do I need to declare it in my Self-Assessment?
