  • Problem in correcting the name at personal tax account

Hi there, This is to share the technical issue at HMRC that cannot correct my name at the personal tax account upon my request over phone on 1st November 2024. My first name was not correctly displayed at the personal tax account, perhaps there is a space between my first name. As a result, my recent application for the UTR before I can file CGT for self assessment has been rejected, as discrepancy was found between HMRC record and my UTR application. I followed the instruction to call HMRC at 0300 200 3300 and hoped that HMRC can correct my name, after my attempts to correct it online failed. Unfortunately, HMRC told me that my name cannot be changed as HMRC was unable to verify my identity over phone, given that I have no employment record for verification. The only option available for me to correct my name is to submit a written application by post. In essence, I will inevitably delay my application for UTR and subsequent filing of my first self assessment return to HMRC, before the change of name can be done manually by HMRC. My queries here are (1) how come the change of name option under the "profile and settings" at the personal tax account doesn't allow me to change the name online; and (2) if there is a space between the first name, can the name be accepted and correctly displayed at the personal tax account online. My suggestion is (1) can it be possible to submit an attachment of a letter about the change of name to HMRC through personal tax account online, so that HMRC can save processing time from scanning the letter after receiving through an artificial postal address at BX9 1AS. I would be very appreciative if the queries could be answered. Thanks and Regards, Kit
