US whistleblowing fee/money/reward
Hi, I am a UK resident. I am a director/shareholder of a UK company. I have been approached by a third party to complete a whistleblowing report in the US with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) about one of our competitors. The report must be submitted by me personally as companies are prohibited from completing. Should the SEC prosecute our competitor, we will be in line to receive a percentage of any fines issued to our competitor, subject to certain conditions. I would like to know if the percentage (I am at pains to call it a reward) I receive will be liable to UK tax. I believe that HMRC will soon release their own whistleblowing facility, so I am happy to receive information as to how this will be dealt with from a tax perspective, as I assume my query is similar in nature. Thanks in advance.
