RE: How to manage someone's tax account online as Power of Attorney
This question has been asked of HMRC a number of times in this community and there is no satisfactory answer, ever! My mother is a few weeks shy of 100 and incredibly she probably could apply for a provisional driving license (just need her to read the number plate at 20 meters)! She can get a license with EITHER a birth cert OR a DWP letter, both of which we have. So, logically a birth cert is equivalent to the driving license HMRC want as ID. No? As we are living longer HMRC have to get a grip of this issue FAST. Its only going to get (much) worse. I think its time to engage with our MPs (which maybe what HMRC would like us to do). HMRC have no chance whatsoever of coping with the imminent deluge of Senior's issues.

RE: Protecting personal tax allowance from estate tax
dreye148, it would be great to know if you were successful presenting evidence to HMRC . It should be reasonably easy to do this and I would have thought HMRC will be keen to enable such reporting in the absence of the banks providing executor easy access payment accounts that pay interest. The typical (albeit rare) executor account current account pays jack-squat so HMRC should prefer 20% of something rather than 20% of nowt. I have this dilemma to address soon and as Tony indicates my obligation to beneficiaries is to use an interest bearing account.
