  • Deferring or transfering CGT when moving home

Hi, I currently live in a property I let out for eight years, then had to move back in (after a divorce). I wish to move home closer to my son's school, but the CGT due is effectively preventing me from moving, unless I downsize (from a very modest three bed end terrace). Can the CGT be deferred (postponed), or transferred to my new home? Or can a payment plan be setup to pay the CGT in installments? To add to my frustration, the family home I lived in for those eight years went to my ex-wife. So despite me buying that property, with extra borrowing on the one I now live in, and all those mortgage payments, I get no tax free capital gains for that entire period.
