Tax Advice after returning to the UK from Australia
I am a UK resident who spent 9 months working in Australia full time and am now back in the UK. I have been trying to get some tax advice from HMRC with varying answers and want more clarification please. I moved to Australia on the 13/08/2023 and was employed from 21/08/2023 - 12/05/2024. I returned to the UK on 19/07/2024 following a short period of travelling. During this time abroad I received no UK income and worked full time in Australia and paid by Australian Healthcare and paid due due Australian tax. I was unaware I needed to contact HMRC prior to leaving and researching now I have found the p85 form which should be filled in, quoting HRMC if you: lived and worked in the UK left the UK and may not be coming back work abroad full time for at least one full tax year Should this/can this P85 form be filled in in retrospect? I have rang up HMRC 3 times and been told that I do not and also do need to fill in a self assessment form, and also by one advisor that I might need to pay UK tax, even though I have paid Australian tax. I worked for 4 months of the 2023-2024 tax year from April to August prior to moving to Australia, and I am now working in the 2024-25 tax year from August 07th 2024 onwards. I want to pay the right amount of tax and not be over/under charged. Please can I get some clarification on how best to proceed with ensuring I pay the right amount of UK tax given my 9 month spell in Australia. I hope you can appreciate the complexity of this case for me given the varying HMRC advice on the phone. Many thanks
