My father died at the end of last year. My husband is the executor of his estate and he completed the tell us once form. A tax refund is due as my dad paid too much tax, died before the end of tax year. Will HMRC automatically refund the tax or do we have to do a tax return. How long should we wait to hear? Have tried calling but lines are busy. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have requested a self assessment due to tax payable on Interest for last tax year 23/24. Have now been advised that my simple assessment charge for 22/23 has now been cancelled. I have yet to submit my tax return for this year but do not understand why my tax for 22/23 is now being looked at. I am up to date with my tax for 22/23 and nothing is owed. Is the simple assessment cancelled as i am now doing a self assessment instead, if so why go back to previous tax year? Any advice is welcome.
