Foreign scholarship - payments taxable as employment income?
Dear Help service, Since March 2023 I have been in England as a guest researcher in a UK university under a global talent visa. I am in this situation because I have been awarded a scholarship which comes from abroad (FOREIGN organization that doesn't have a presence in the UK). After several research I understood that my scholarship is not taxable so doesn't need to be declared (see this forum Starter Checklist for PAYE & Self-Assessment & Foreign scholarship but also https://www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/employment-income-manual/eim06210). And it is even written in the rules of my scholarship that I should not paid taxe as my scholarship is a continuation of my education. The bank of the country from which I am receiving this scholarship is asking me to provide my English tax ID number as I am currently living in England (for this scholarship). However, I do not have any tax ID number as I do not pay taxes, and I never register for National Insurance number as I am paying for a immigration health surcharge (IHS). My questions are the following: 1) Do I still need to go to National Insurance to get a National Insurance number? 2) Should I ask for an official document explaining my situation and the fact that I don't have this number? 3) Do I have to register for another government tax system? Thank you so much for your help. All the best
