RE: Notice of Penalty for self-assessment but Tax was paid on time!!
I have already appealed (twice) and made my first complaint today after receiving a penalty notice for £800 for a self assessment tax return that was completed on time and where the tax owed was fully paid and receipt of funds was acknowledged by HMRC. I have no idea how to solve this now and fully expect to keep receiving threatening letters with increasing penalty fines which is extremely stressful. Is there a phone number I can speak to someone on as this can be resolved within 5 minutes. -
Notice of Penalty for self-assessment but Tax was paid on time!!
I received a Self Assessment request for 2022-2023 and logged in to file my return. The request from HMRC had a Tax Reference attached to it which appeared to be new and different from my existing number. I tried to log-in using the new Tax reference number but the system recognised my original tax account details and I was directed to log-in to my existing account and Tax reference details. I completed the self assessment on the existing account and paid the tax owed well within the deadline. I then received a penalty notice for £100 advising I had not completed the self assessment. I submitted an appeal with all the supporting evidence and thought that was the end of the matter. I then received a second penalty notice for £100 and again submitted an appeal with full supporting evidence. Today I have received a penalty notice for £800 for a tax return that I completed on time and paid the tax owed. The stress levels caused by this process are unbelievable. I cannot speak to a human being at HMRC to get this resolved as it has to be done online or via letter. I am being completely ignored and the lack of feedback from HMRC and the increasingly threatening fine notices keep coming. I do not know what to do and have joined this forum hoping that someone at HMRC reads this and can help.
