UK Capital Gains Tax to pay on house sold in France

We have sold our house in France this month: It is part owned by two families, How do we notify HMRC of our gains and, also, how do we try and recover the French tax already paid? We have no experience in completing self assessment forms as we have always been covered by PAYE.
