I have owned and lived in my current property for approx 18 years. It is my intention to purchase another property that will require a lot of building work and will not be occupied during this time. I estimate that it may take 1 year to complete the work before I can then move into it and sell my current property. Could I be affected by CGT at all if I proceed this way?

Hi,
You need to pay Capital Gains Tax when you sell (or 'dispose of) an asset if your total taxable gains are above your annual Capital Gains Tax allowance.
You can work out if you need to pay Captial Gains Tax when you sell (or 'dispose of') your home and find out if you are eligible for Private Residence Relief using the following guidance:
Tax when you sell your home.
Thank you.

I’m sorry but you haven’t answered my question. Are you saying that even if I don’t move into the 2nd property until the building work is completed and that the property is empty while building work is ongoing, that I will need to pay CGT on my residential home that I am leaving when I sell it? Surely that can’t be right?
