Selling home you rent out ?

Firstly, If I move away from the UK and then come back to sell a property will the government gateway I use for tax purposes automatically work provided I have kept all the relevant details. If I share a property with my wife, would I simply divide the sale price and expenditures by two, with my wife doing the same thing ? So that the correct proportion of tax is attributed to each other.
