Hi HMRC, If I were to sell an asset today, the rate of capital gains applicable would be 20% in my case. If Rachel Reeves were to announce changes in the autumn budget to CGT would those changes only be applied prospectively or would the be applicable to a transaction that I carry out today as Oct 2024 would be part of the current financial year. would very much appreciate your reply. thanks

Hi,
HMRC cannot comment on future events or any potential changes in legislation.
Thank you.

how has it happened in past budgets? is it normally applied after October or have there been cases where it was applied retroactively?

Hi antwillant

It is normally applied in a later tax year but as we cannot advise on future events there is no guarantee that this will apply for the forthcoming budget.

Thank you
