Does duty need to be paid when goods are bought into Ireland directly from the suppliers factory in Germany, if the order was placed on a company in the UK?

No . As you have described the goods are remaining in the EU so there is no customs duty between EU countries. The location of the buyer is not relevant. There may however be a VAT question in either Ireland or Germany as you must be taking ownership of the goods in the EU to be able to sell them on to your customer in Ireland. Ownership does not necessarily mean that you have to take physical possession of the goods.

Hi,
UK customs charges are applicable if goods are imported into Great Britain from EU.
If goods are imported into Ireland from EU this will fall under the remits of Irish customs to offer advice.
If business making sale in UK is VAT registered then trader needs to contact VAT helpline for any VAT implications.
Thank you.
